Grabbing a tape measure and checking your available headroom can give you a fantastic early indication of your loft’s potential, helping us hit the ground running when we arrive to discuss your design options. Below, we’ll walk you through exactly what you need to measure and how to do it.
How to Accurately Measure Your Loft Space
A standard loft conversion typically requires a minimum head height of 2500 mm of finished headroom to walk comfortably, and the remaining 300mm gets eaten up by essential structural elements: new floor joists below and building-regulation-compliant insulation above.
To find out if your space qualifies, take a tape measure into your loft and measure the vertical distance from the floor joists (the top of your existing ceiling) directly up to the apex of the roof. Specifically, you need to measure to the highest roof timber, known as the ridge board. If your measurement meets or exceeds 2500 mm, your loft has excellent potential for a conversion.
Some quick tips are:
- Wait for a cool day (lofts get incredibly hot).
- Bring a reliable tape measure and a torch.
- Measure from the top of the existing ceiling joist to the underside of the highest roof timber (the ridge).
