Adrian and his team completed our loft conversion in April 2023, superb job from start to finish. Friendly, positive and very accommodating, even allowing a last minute change of layout during the conversion. Very happy with the final result.

We were extremely fortunate to be able to use O’Sullivan Loft Conversions. Myself and my husband are absolutely useless when it comes to anything DIY but it didn’t matter as Adrian and his team ran the entire project which made it so much less stressful for us. Communication was excellent so we knew exactly what to expect and a payment schedule was given to us before any work had even been done so there weren’t any nasty surprises. We were also invited to inspect the work at any stage and were kept constantly updated with the progress.

Adrian and his team treated our house with respect, interacting with our kids and leaving everything clean and tidy every day. They understood that this was our home and not a building site.

Would definitely recommend to anyone who is thinking of undertaking such a project.

We had Adrian and team do our loft conversion and it was a first class experience. From the initial quote, to planning and having the work done we have no complaints.

The quote process was excellent, everything was explained and ideas shared. Adrian provided the architect who did all the drawing and planning applications and the work was started early which was fine and fit in with our own plans.

His team worked diligently and considering the huge amount of work being done everything was tidy and clean.

I would highly recommend Adrian for loft conversions.

Transformational spaces

Many homes have a sloping side roof, known as a hipped roof. While this roof design performs well structurally, it reduces the amount of available headroom and floor space within the loft. Hip to gable loft conversions in Wolverhampton & the wider West Midlands remove this limitation by extending the sloping side roof vertically to create a new gable wall.

This transformation significantly increases the internal volume of the loft, creating a wider and more practical living space. In many cases, it provides enough additional room to accommodate a large bedroom, master suite with en-suite, home office, or multiple rooms within the new loft area.

For homeowners with a suitable property, a hip-to-gable conversion can unlock space that would otherwise remain difficult to use within the original roof structure.

Is a Hip-to-Gable Loft Conversion Right for You?

Hip-to-gable conversions are most commonly carried out on semi-detached and detached properties where the side roof slopes inward towards the ridge.

By replacing this sloping section with a full-height gable wall, the loft becomes substantially wider and easier to use. This additional width often creates opportunities that would be difficult to achieve within the original roof shape alone.

A hip-to-gable conversion may be particularly suitable if:

  • Your property has a hipped side roof.
  • You would like to maximise the overall size of the loft.
  • You are planning a master bedroom with an en-suite or multiple rooms.
  • You want greater flexibility when designing room layouts.
  • Your existing loft feels restricted by the sloping side roof.

During our site survey, we take detailed measurements of the roof and discuss the options available. In many cases, extending the hip to form a gable can unlock significantly more usable space than a roof window conversion alone.ne.ed decisions based on the physical realities of the property rather than guesswork.

Why Homeowners Choose Hip-to-Gable Conversions

Increased Internal Volume

The primary benefit of a hip-to-gable conversion is the significant increase in usable loft space. By extending the roof outward to form a vertical gable wall, much of the space previously lost to the sloping side roof becomes available for everyday use.

Improved Room Proportions

The additional width often creates rooms that feel more balanced and practical. Furniture placement becomes easier, circulation routes improve, and layouts can be designed with fewer restrictions than within the original roof shape.

Greater Design Flexibility

The increase in available space can create opportunities for larger bedrooms, dedicated home offices, dressing areas, and more generous bathroom layouts. This additional flexibility is often one of the main reasons homeowners choose a hip-to-gable conversion.

Ideal for Larger Loft Projects

Hip-to-gable conversions are also known as wrap-around dormers. Wrap-around dormer alterations can create a substantial new floor area while also having a few options for external design appearance.

How We Build Your Hip-to-Gable Conversion

While extending your roof requires structural changes, our experienced team handles all the detailed planning and construction to ensure a smooth, straightforward build.

1. Structural Support and Steelwork

The new floor structure and roof alterations are supported using structural steelwork designed specifically for your property. This ensures loads are transferred correctly through the building while providing a solid and durable structure for the new living accommodation.

2. New Gable Wall Construction

We build a solid new vertical gable wall to extend your roofline. Depending on the style of your property, this is built using brick, rendered block, or a structural timber frame

3. Roof Extension and Weatherproofing

The roof structure is extended across to meet the new gable wall. Construction is carefully sequenced so the new structure becomes weatherproof as early as possible, helping to protect the property throughout the build process.

See Your Loft Before Construction Begins

Every property is different, and a wrap-around conversion significantly changes the shape and feel of the loft.

During the planning and design stage, we create a digital model of the proposed conversion so you can understand exactly how the finished space will work.

Using our Meta Quest 3 virtual reality system, you can step inside a full-scale representation of your future loft and assess:

  • Room layouts and new gable width
  • Staircase locations and head clearance
  • Window positions
  • Bathroom arrangements
  • Furniture placement
  • Circulation routes

This allows important design decisions to be made with confidence before construction begins.

Real Project Example: Wrap-around Conversion in Dudley

The project shown below demonstrates how extending a hipped roof can transform a restricted loft into a spacious, wide, and highly practical living area.

By building up the side gable wall, we were able to create a layout that accommodated a large master suite and a comfortable, naturally lit staircase—a configuration that would have been completely unworkable within the original roof shape.

The finished result delivered significantly more internal volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my loft support a wrap-around / hip-to-gable conversion?

As a general rule, we look for a minimum existing head height of approximately 2.3 metres.During our survey, we measure the roof structure carefully and assess whether the available dimensions are suitable for conversion.

Do I need planning permission?

Many hip-to-gable conversions fall under Permitted Development rights. However, factors such as the total volume of the proposed extension and if your home is in a conservation area can influence requirements. We assess this during the initial survey and explain any planning rules that apply to you.

Can I combine a hip-to-gable with a rear dormer?

Yes. In fact, this is one of the most popular ways to maximize loft space. By extending the side out to a gable and building a flat roof dormer out the back, you achieve the largest possible floor area, completely transforming the layout potential of the room. Also known as a wrap-around dormer.
